Origins & Expanding Horizons

Merkel Company, Inc began in 1919, when William Merkel and his brother, Edward, first formed their partnership known as Merkel Electric. Among their earliest contracts was the construction of a power line along the Marathon County line road east from North Central Avenue in Marshfield.

In the 1930’s Merkel Electric added the sale and service of General Electric appliances into their scope of services.

After completing his service at the end of World War II, Karl, William’s son, returned to the family business. In 1960 Karl purchased William’s interest in the business and subsequently expanded into real estate development and maintenance, showcasing versatility and adaptability.

Passing the Torch

Succession within the company saw the gradual inclusion of family members, with Thomas J. Merkel and Robert P. Merkel injecting their expertise into the electrical contracting and property development arms of the business.

Community Engagement

The Merkel Companies have been deeply involved in community initiatives, contributing to diverse causes and organizations, including the American Legion Post 54 and various community support groups.

Adaptation and Focus

In 2005, the company underwent a significant transformation, formally becoming Merkel Company, Inc. with a renewed focus on electrical work. The shifting landscape saw a concentration on electrical services, systems design, and general construction for commercial buildings.

This redefined approach ensures Merkel Company, Inc. continues to be a pioneering force in the electrical and construction sectors, delivering quality solutions and contributing to the development of thriving communities across the state.
